Liposuction
Liposuction is a popular surgical procedure aimed at body contouring by removing localized fat deposits. Most often, liposuction is performed in the abdominal area, where fat tends to accumulate and is hardest to reduce through diet and exercise. Modern techniques allow for a more defined waist, improved body contours, and the elimination of “problem areas” with minimal trauma.

What is Liposuction
Liposuction is a surgical intervention during which subcutaneous fat is removed from specific areas of the body. The operation is performed under local or general anesthesia and requires strict adherence to the doctor’s recommendations at all stages—from preparation to rehabilitation. Abdominal liposuction is the most in-demand, as this area most frequently suffers from localized deposits, especially after pregnancy or sudden weight changes.
Indications for Liposuction
Liposuction is recommended for patients who:
have significant localized fat deposits in the abdomen, flanks, waist;
cannot eliminate fat through physical activity and diet;
want to contour the body and improve shape;
have stable weight and normal skin elasticity;
do not have serious chronic illnesses.
Contraindications for Liposuction
The procedure is contraindicated in the case of:
severe cardiovascular and respiratory diseases;
oncological conditions;
blood clotting disorders;
pregnancy and breastfeeding;
acute infectious processes;
severe obesity (liposuction is not a weight-loss method).
Types of Liposuction
There are several liposuction methods differing in technique and indications:
Mechanical
The classic method where fat is removed using a cannula and vacuum. Suitable for moderate volumes of fat deposits.
Water-jet
A gentle fat removal method using a pressurized water solution. Allows for delicate tissue handling and is suitable for sensitive areas.
Ultrasound
Destroys fat cells with ultrasound before removal. Effective for dense fat tissue and can be combined with other methods.
Laser
The most modern technology using a laser to destroy fat and simultaneously tighten the skin through thermal effects.
How the Liposuction Procedure is Performed
Preoperative Examination
The patient undergoes full diagnostics: blood tests, ECG, consultations with specialists. This helps rule out contraindications and choose the optimal method.
Preparation for Surgery
A few days before the procedure, it is necessary to stop taking anticoagulants, avoid smoking and alcohol, and follow the doctor's recommendations regarding diet and routine.
Procedure Steps
Marking the liposuction areas.
Administration of anesthesia.
Fat tissue breakdown (using laser, ultrasound, etc., if needed).
Fat removal with a cannula.
Wound treatment and dressing.
Procedure Duration
The surgery lasts from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the volume of fat and the chosen technique. In most cases, hospitalization is not required.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Liposuction
Advantages:
targeted fat removal;
fast visual results;
can be combined with other procedures;
long-term results with adherence to recommendations.
Disadvantages:
risk of complications;
possible bruising, swelling, numbness;
requires recovery period.
Recovery Period
First 2–3 Days
The patient may feel discomfort, swelling, and bruising. Complete rest and wearing compression garments are recommended.
First 10–14 Days
Most discomfort subsides. Physical activity, sauna, and bath visits are prohibited.
First 3–4 Weeks
Wearing of compression garments continues. Gradual return to daily activities is allowed, avoiding abdominal strain.
2–3 Months After Surgery
Final results become visible. Tissues fully recover, and all external signs of intervention disappear.
Possible Complications and Consequences
In rare cases, the following may occur:
hematomas and seromas;
loss of skin sensitivity;
irregularities and asymmetry;
inflammation or infection;
allergic reaction to anesthesia.
To minimize risks, it is important to consult experienced surgeons and strictly follow all recommendations.
Cost
The price of liposuction depends on the chosen technique, fat volume, type of anesthesia, and clinic level. The average cost in Russia ranges from $1000 to $2600. The exact amount is determined after an in-person consultation and examination.
