Facelift
A facelift is a plastic surgery procedure aimed at eliminating age-related changes in the skin and soft tissues. With age, the skin loses elasticity, muscle tone decreases, and wrinkles and sagging contours appear. A facelift helps restore the clear lines of the facial oval and give the face a younger, more refreshed look. Modern techniques focus not only on removing excess skin but also on working with deep tissues, ensuring a natural and long-lasting result without a “tight” effect.

Causes of Aging Changes
Age-related changes are associated with a complex of internal and external factors.
The main ones include:
decreased production of collagen and elastin;
weakening of the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS);
loss of soft tissue volume;
exposure to ultraviolet radiation, stress, smoking, and lack of sleep;
slowed metabolism and impaired microcirculation.
These changes lead to the formation of wrinkles, sagging cheeks, folds in the neck area, and loss of facial contour definition.
Indications and Contraindications for the Procedure
Main indications for surgery:
pronounced wrinkles and folds;
sagging of soft tissues in the midface and lower face;
excess skin on the neck;
decreased tone and loss of contour definition.
Contraindications include acute inflammatory diseases, blood clotting disorders, severe cardiovascular and endocrine pathologies, oncological conditions, and pregnancy. The decision to proceed with the surgery is made by a plastic surgeon after a full medical examination.
Types of Facelift
There are several types of facelifts, differing in the depth of impact and the scope of intervention.
Classical Rhytidectomy
A full facelift corrects pronounced age-related changes. The surgeon makes incisions in the temporal area and behind the ear, tightens the muscles and skin, and removes excess tissue. The effect lasts up to 10–12 years.
Cheek Lift (Midface Lift)
This method targets the midface — cheeks and cheekbones. It helps eliminate nasolabial folds and restores a youthful expression with minimal incisions and a short recovery period.
Endoscopic Facelift
A minimally invasive procedure performed through small punctures using an endoscope. It allows correction of the upper and midface areas, smoothing wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes. It is characterized by gentle tissue impact and a short rehabilitation period.
Mendelson Lift
A deep technique aimed at restoring the natural anatomy of facial tissues. The surgeon repositions the structures to their original location while preserving individual facial features. The result lasts up to 15 years.
SMAS Facelift
Targets the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS). The method achieves a pronounced rejuvenating effect while maintaining a natural appearance. It is used for moderate to advanced signs of aging.
Thread Lift
A minimally invasive technique in which absorbable threads are inserted into the skin to create a supportive framework and stimulate collagen production. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and requires minimal recovery time.
Preparation for Facelift Surgery
Before surgery, a consultation with a plastic surgeon, medical history review, and laboratory tests are required. The doctor assesses the condition of the skin, its elasticity, and the volume of soft tissues, selecting the optimal technique.
Two weeks before surgery, it is recommended to avoid taking anticoagulants, smoking, and alcohol to reduce the risk of complications and promote better healing.
Stages of the Procedure
How the Operation is Performed
A facelift is performed under general anesthesia and lasts from 2 to 5 hours, depending on the extent of the intervention. The surgeon makes incisions along the natural hairline and behind the ears, repositions the tissues anatomically, removes excess skin if necessary, and secures the result with absorbable sutures. A sterile dressing is applied after completion.
Recovery After Surgery
The rehabilitation period lasts about 2–3 weeks.
Mild swelling and bruising may occur in the first few days — this is a normal tissue response. Stitches are removed on the 7th–10th day, after which the patient can gradually return to normal activities.
It is recommended to avoid physical exertion, saunas, and tanning for one month. The final result is assessed after 2–3 months, when tissues are fully healed.
Possible Complications
Like any surgical procedure, a facelift may be accompanied by temporary side effects such as swelling, altered skin sensitivity, and hematomas. In rare cases, inflammatory reactions or visible scars may occur. Following the surgeon’s recommendations and proper preoperative preparation minimize the risk of complications.
Surgery Results and Longevity
The facelift result becomes visible after tissue recovery: facial contours become more defined, skin becomes firmer, and wrinkles are smoothed out. The effect lasts from 8 to 15 years, depending on the technique used, skin characteristics, and the patient’s lifestyle. To maintain results, a balanced diet, sun protection, and regular skincare are recommended.
