Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure aimed at correcting the upper and lower eyelids. It eliminates excess skin, fat herniation, puffiness, corrects the eye shape, and gives the eyes a more open and youthful appearance. The procedure is highly popular among both women and men, as it helps eliminate age-related and anatomical changes in the eye area.

General Information about Blepharoplasty
With age, the skin around the eyes loses elasticity, muscles weaken, and bags appear under the eyes. Blepharoplasty effectively addresses these issues. Depending on the area of concern and the degree of changes, a plastic surgeon selects the appropriate surgical method.
Blepharoplasty can be performed as a standalone procedure or as part of comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Its goal is not to alter facial features but to gently and naturally refresh the appearance by eliminating age-related changes around the eyelids.
Indications for Blepharoplasty
Medical Indications
Impaired field of vision due to sagging upper eyelid skin
Chronic puffiness around the eyes not related to internal diseases
Fat herniation exerting pressure on the eyeball
Eyelid asymmetry after trauma or surgery
Cosmetic Indications
Bags under the eyes
Excess skin on the upper or lower eyelid
Deep wrinkles around the eyes
Loss of defined eye shape
Drooping of the outer corners of the eyes
Overall tired and aged appearance
Contraindications for Blepharoplasty
Before surgery, the following conditions must be ruled out:
Acute inflammatory and infectious diseases
Exacerbation of chronic illnesses
Severe cardiovascular disorders
Blood clotting disorders
Ophthalmic conditions (e.g., glaucoma, dry eye syndrome, etc.)
Oncological processes
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Types of Blepharoplasty
Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty
Targets the removal of excess skin and fat in the upper eyelid area. Helps eliminate drooping and "heavy" appearance, improves eye shape, and relieves visual field obstruction.
Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty
Performed when pronounced bags, fat herniation, and wrinkles are present under the eyes. Reduces puffiness and smooths the under-eye area.
Circular (Full) Blepharoplasty
A combined procedure correcting both upper and lower eyelids simultaneously. Suitable for patients with pronounced age-related changes.
Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty
A sutureless technique where fat herniation is removed through the inner surface of the lower eyelid. Used for younger patients with no excess skin.
Thread Blepharoplasty
A non-surgical method of correction using absorbable threads. Suitable for early-stage changes and does not require long recovery time.
Preparation for Blepharoplasty
Preparation steps include:
Consultation with a plastic surgeon and ophthalmologist
Blood tests and ECG
Quitting smoking and anticoagulants 1–2 weeks before surgery
Avoiding alcohol
Limiting physical activity and following medical recommendations one day before surgery
Surgical Procedure
Blepharoplasty is performed under local or general anesthesia depending on the extent of the intervention. The surgeon makes incisions along natural eyelid folds or from the inner side (in transconjunctival technique), removes excess skin and fat, and reinforces the musculo-fascial structures. Cosmetic sutures are applied afterward.
Stages of Blepharoplasty
Consultation and diagnosis
Planning the scope of intervention
Performing surgical correction
Initial check-up the following day
Suture removal (usually on day 5–7)
Evaluation of results after 1–2 months
Recovery after Blepharoplasty
The recovery period lasts from 7 to 14 days. During this time, swelling, bruising, dry eyes, and slight discomfort may occur. It is recommended to:
Apply cold compresses
Limit visual strain and avoid sleeping on the stomach
Avoid physical exertion and saunas
Use prescribed eye drops
Results become noticeable after 2–3 weeks, with the final effect visible in 2–3 months post-surgery.
Possible Complications and Risks
Although blepharoplasty is considered minimally invasive, possible risks include:
Hemorrhage and swelling
Eye asymmetry
Temporary dry eyes
Ectropion (rare)
Choosing a qualified clinic and following the surgeon’s recommendations significantly reduces the risk of complications.
Blepharoplasty Results
After the procedure, the gaze becomes fresher and more open, bags, sagging folds, and deep wrinkles disappear. Eyelid blepharoplasty provides a long-lasting rejuvenating effect without altering one’s natural facial features.
Cost
The price depends on the scope of the intervention, the type of blepharoplasty, and the clinic’s level. On average, the cost ranges from $1000 to $2000. The exact price is determined after consultation and medical evaluation.
